Community explores behind-the-scenes at the Port
The Port of Southampton opened its gates to the local community, inviting over 300 residents for a behind-the-scenes tour. ABP Southampton organised the tour for one day during the Easter holidays. It featured a look back at the Port's maritime history, explanations of current operations, a Q&A session with a marine pilot, and a coach tour around the site.
Since the foundation stone in the Eastern Docks was first laid in 1838, the Port has expanded to accommodate larger vessels and continues to support UK trade. Spanning over 700 acres, it is a major maritime hub known for container handling, vehicle processing, and cruise operations. The Port serves as a significant economic driver for both Southampton and the UK and major employer in the area. It was a good opportunity to talk to the public about the careers options available via the Port and its partners.
The Port of Southampton supports 15,000 jobs in the Solent and 45,000 across the UK through its supply chains. During the event, Katie Bruce was on hand to talk to young people and parents about the careers on offer within the Port and its supply chains. She also promoted the Careers event in November and asked young people what they would like from their work experience.
Portsmouth International Port is opening its doors to primary school children in the local area to celebrate the upcoming Sail GP race, the MTCP will be supporting on the day along with Williams Shipping. The goal of the event is to inspire the younger generation with STEM careers in maritime and transport including ferry, cruise and cargo operations.
