Record-breaking vehicle carrier visits Southampton

The Glovis Lighthouse, one of the world’s largest vehicle carriers, has made its first European port call at the Port of Southampton. With capacity for up to 10,800 car equivalent units, the vessel is the largest vehicle carrier by capacity to have visited the port.

The vessel called at the recently deepened and extended berth at ABP Solent Gateway. The visit demonstrates how investment in port infrastructure is helping Southampton accommodate the latest generation of ships and continue supporting international automotive trade. The 230-metre dual-fuel vessel can operate using liquefied natural gas and is expected to reduce carbon emissions by approximately 24% compared with conventional fuels.

A ship call of this scale relies on people working across vessel planning, marine operations, towage, cargo handling, logistics, customs, shipping agencies, engineering and port safety. It is a strong example of the many shoreside teams and specialist skills needed to keep international trade moving.
