MTCP at Testwood School’s Year 7 Business Networking Event
The Maritime and Transport Careers Programme had a fantastic time supporting 170 Year 7 students from Testwood School at their recent Business Networking Event.
From the moment the sessions began, it was clear that these young learners were full of energy, curiosity, and ambition. They asked thoughtful questions about careers, opportunities, and the future of the maritime and transport industry. Their enthusiasm showed just how powerful early exposure to careers education can be.
One of the standout moments of the day was the young peoples eagerness to understand the huge range of pathways available within the sector. They were keen to explore how the industry works, what skills are needed, and where different roles could take them in the future.
Their questions reflected real, forward‑thinking interest from wanting to know how ships are powered, to what digital roles exist in logistics and whether the Solent region offers opportunities close to home. Watching them make the connection between their studies and real‑world careers was genuinely inspiring.
Events like this play a vital role in helping young people build the skills and confidence they’ll carry throughout their education and into their working lives. For many Year 7 students, this will have been their first experience speaking directly with employers and professionals and they embraced it brilliantly.
By stepping into a networking environment early on, they had the chance to:
· Strengthen communication skills
· Build confidence in asking questions
· Develop early awareness of career options
· Begin imagining themselves in future roles
These experiences help create a strong foundation before they make key choices later in school.
We were incredibly impressed by the maturity, engagement, and excitement demonstrated by the students throughout the event. Their willingness to explore new ideas reminds us exactly why the Maritime and Transport Careers Programme exists, to open doors, broaden horizons, and ensure young people feel empowered to pursue opportunities they may never have considered.
We are grateful to Testwood School for inviting us to be part of such a meaningful day, and we look forward to continuing to support their students as they discover the opportunities waiting for them across our vibrant sector.
